EndNote 20 (desktop) is a better reference management tool than EndNote Basic or EndNote Online, with many additional features not available in the basic/online versions.  See:

For this reason, we recommend you use EndNote Desktop 20 and only use an online version for 'syncing'.  You would need to sync your libraries if:

  • you need to use more than one device (e.g. PC at University and personal laptop)
  • you want to share your references/Library with colleagues/friends
  • you have previously used EndNote Online and wish to start using EndNote Desktop (syncing will get all of your online library references into your desktop library).
