EndNote

What is syncing and why would I need to do it?

Syncing or Activating your EndNote account provides access to:

  • the new EndNote Web
  • Cite While You Write for Word Online & Google Docs
  • AI Key Takeaways
  • Research Assistant
  • Find a Journal

In addition, because it is not recommended to save your EndNote Library onto cloud storage, it gives you:

  • a back up library
  • allows you to access your library on different devices via EndNote Web

If you have previously used EndNote Online/Basic and wish to start using EndNote Desktop, syncing will get all of your existing references into your new EndNote desktop library.

Syncing with EndNote Web also allows you to share your EndNote Library, or selected reference groups, with colleagues/friends.

If you wish to sync your accounts, you do this within EndNote desktop:

  1. In EndNote, go to the Edit menu (or EndNote menu on the macOS) and select 'Preferences...' > Sync
  2. Click the 'Enable Sync' button to go to the EndNote Web Login.  Follow the instructions.
  3. Once you have enabled the sync, check the tickbox that says 'Sync Automatically'
  4. Click 'OK'
