EndNote

Introduction

In order to use EndNote for citing and referencing you should:

  1. Install EndDnote onto your personal device
  2. Open the EN program and create/save ONE EndNote Library *
  3. Active your EndNote Web/Sync account
  4. Download the Harvard HWU Cite Them Right style (if applicable)
  5. Add records into your Library (import/export/type in)
    • this could include bibliographic details (e.g. author, title, year etc.), full-text PDFs and other documents
      • you can change the preferences in EndNote to make this easier
      • you can download EndNote Click to make this easier
  6. Organise and manage your ENL:
    • create groups/folders (organising allows you to have multiple groups/folders within ONE library)
    • adding notes/tags to help remember references
    • deduplicate references
  7. Use the Search functionality to search all your records and full-text PDFs
    • all fields in EndNote are searchable, allowing you to more easily find the references that you need.
  8. Use the EndNote Toolbar in Word to insert in-text citations and automatically create and format your Reference List according to your selected style (Cite While Your Write)

Find full details of how to do all of these things in the appropriate numbered section in this Guide.

* Please note: You should only have one EndNote Library. Multiple libraries inevitably means confusion with where references are saved, duplication and mistakes. You can have one library and multiple groups/folders in that Library. If you are using more than one device, then it is possible to sync with EndNote Web to ensure that you have the same EndNote library on each device. Details of how to this is given in section 2.0.
