What are styles?

The citation/reference style determines how your in-text citations and reference lists are formatted.  There are over 7,000 styles built into EndNote.  For those that wish to use a Harvard style, we would recommend that you use ‘Harvard HWU Cite Them Right’.  This style matches the recommendations in:

How to get the 'Harvard HWU Cite Them Right' style

University managed PCs

The Harvard HWU Cite Them Right style is available in EndNote Desktop on all HWU managed PCs.  See below for how to make sure you can see this style in Word.

Own laptop/PC

If you have your own copy of EndNote Desktop and want to use this style, then you will need to download/save the style file below.  Note: you need to save the style file into your 'Styles' folder (as this is where Word looks for the styles that are then available in the EndNote toolbar).  This folder will be in the directory where you installed EndNote on your laptop (this is usually C:\Users\<username>\Documents\EndNote\Styles).

If you click on the .ens file to download, then open the file and ‘Save as' it should be saved in the correct folder.

Please note updates are made to the style as and when we notice any changes need to be made, so please check periodically to make sure you have the latest update.

'Cite Them Right-Harvard' v 'Harvard HWU Cite Them Right'

Note: 'Cite Them Right-Harvard' is not the same as 'Harvard HWU Cite Them Right'.  'Cite Them Right-Harvard' does not actually match the guidance in Cite Them Right online and we have no control over this style.  This is why we recommend 'Harvard HWU Cite Them Right'.

For further help with referencing styles in EndNote see Section 8.0:

Getting additional styles on your laptop/home PC

If you have installed EndNote 21 on to your own laptop, you may not have all the referencing styles you need.  The default installation has around 500 styles, but over 7,000 are available.

To add additional styles to your own computer.  In EndNote go to:

  • 'Tools'
  • 'output styles'
  • 'open style manager'
  • Click 'Get more on the Web...'
  • Select the styles you want to download or there is a "download all styles" option near the top of the page
  • Save the style files into your 'Endnote styles' folder.
    • This folder will be in the directory where you installed EndNote on your laptop.  (If you have downloaded all the styles, you will have a "zip" file.  Double click on this to unzip it before transferring the .ens style files into your style folder.)
