EndNote

Cite While You Write (CWYW)

Inserting citations and references into Word using EndNote is called 'Cite While you Write'. For this you need the EndNote toolbar in Word. The toolbar allows your EndNote Library and your Word document to 'talk' to each other. The toolbar looks like this:

You will see that 'EndNote 20' is now one of the toolbar tabs.

Note: The EndNote tab is not the same as the References tab. The References tab should not be used for referencing (but can be used for creating Table of Contents)

How do I get the EndNote toolbar?

  • The toolbar is already available on all University managed PCs, if you cannot see it, please contact the ISHelpdesk.
  • The toolbar should be available on your own personal device as part of the EndNote install.  If you cannot see it, please contact the ISHelpdesk.

Where can I get help using EndNote?

See our Training Materials section for help setting up and using EndNote, or you may prefer to sign up to one of our EndNote classes, which we deliver regularly throughout the year as part of the Skills Hub programme.

Alternatively, if you have a specific question, or if wish to arrange a class for a group of staff/students, please contact your Liaison Librarian.

For further help with the CWYW toolbar, see Section 8.0:
