EndNote

Cite While You Write (CWYW)

Inserting citations and references into Word using EndNote is called 'Cite While you Write'. For this you need the EndNote toolbar in Word. The toolbar allows your EndNote Library and your Word document to 'talk' to each other. The toolbar looks like this:

You will see that 'EndNote 21' is now one of the toolbar tabs.

Note: The 'EndNote 21' tab is not the same as the 'References' tab. The References tab should not be used for referencing (but can be used for creating Table of Contents)

How do I get the EndNote toolbar?

  • The toolbar is already available on all University managed PCs, if you cannot see it, please contact the ITHelpdesk.
  • The toolbar should be available on your own personal device as part of the EndNote install.  If you cannot see it, please contact the ITHelpdesk.

For further help with the CWYW toolbar, see Section 8.0:

Where can I get help using EndNote 21?

For help setting up and using EndNote, see our Training Materials section, or you may prefer to sign up to one of our EndNote classes, which we deliver regularly throughout the year as part of the Skills Hub programme.
