EGIS (Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society): PhD students

Researcher Development (Research Futures)

Literature Searching, Citing & Referencing and Reference Management are three key areas of getting started with your research.  As part of Research Futures programme for Heriot-Watt researchers, we deliver a set of online training on:

  • Literature Searching (Domain A)
  • Citing and Referencing (Domain C)

This Literature Searching course aims to ensure that you know:

  • What is a literature review
  • What does a literature review/PhD look like
  • Which resources you have access to use and which should use
  • Where to start? Literature finding: when you know what you are looking for
  • Next step? Literature searching: effective searches and advanced search features
  • Found something good?  Using what you know to find other useful articles
  • Keeping up-to-date with alerts (search, citation and table of contents)
  • Managing your references
  • Accessing the full-text
  • Accessing other libraries
  • Further help and contact details

Feedback on these courses is always positive. For further details of all their other courses, see:
